I was the lone assistant editor for the documentary feature THE FIRST YEAR.
It tracked an entire school year of recent graduates working under the 2-year "Teach For America" contract.
A 2002 Peabody Award winner, it was director Davis Guggenheim's first documentary feature.
5 years later, Davis won an Oscar for "An Inconvenient Truth."
I was asked to edit one of the first days of the year for this kindergarten teacher.
Ultimately, his story wasn't chosen for the movie, but this sequence still has tremendous power.
